We’re very excited to announced that two of our successful grant applicants have been invited and accepted to be ambassadors for Fletchers Foundation.
Who better to help us spread the word of what we do than two incredible people who have been through the process of successfully applying for one of our grants.
We’re very happy that they will be actively involved in promoting the foundation and working with us to help more people in a similar situation that they were in.
Meet our Ambassadors and watch their stories.
Meet Catherine, who has Congenital Muscular Dystrophy.
Catherine’s progressive condition has meant that she gone from being able to walk to being wheelchair dependent.
Partnering with other foundations, we awarded our largest grant yet to help fund a Balder F290 Standing, Tilt, Recline and Riser Powered Wheelchair.
This will provide Catherine the independence to comfortably eat at the dinner table, work at the computer and begin playing the piano again.
But more than this, it will allow her to talk at eye level and hug her family and friends.
Meet Dale, who has a paralysed core, following a spinal tumour.
Dale hadn’t had any physio input since the tumour, so we jointly funded an intensive 4-week course for Dale at The Rehab Physio, based on the Wirral.
This was jointly funded with Frenkel Topping Charitable Foundation and Rooprai Spinal Trust.
By the time Sonny came to the Foundation, he had been playing wheel-chair rugby for a year and a half, using a chair on loan from the club.
The loan chair he used was far too big for him and was unsafe. In a training session, he had a bad crash with another player in which he hit the back of his head badly on the floor and knocked himself out cold. On top of the multiple disabilities and injurie, he now had a head injury to recover from.
Sonny applied to the Foundation for a made-to-measure wheel that would enable him to return safely to the sport he loves.
Fletchers Foundation and Frenkel Topping Foundation funded this piece of equipment jointly, and Sonny is now back playing for his team, which have had a great start to their season.
Meet Helen who obtained a spinal cord injury in 2021.
Helen successfully applied to us for an electric mobility scooter, that she has called Moira.
Before receiving the electric mobility scooter, Helen was using a standard non-motorised chair which limited her ability to go out into the community. Helen lives at the bottom of a hill, which required approx. 110 pushes each time she wanted to go into to town. This caused her nerve damage in her arms and meant that some days she was stuck at home.
