Grants for Wheelchairs

About Fletchers Foundation

Fletchers Foundation is a charitable foundation launched by Fletchers Group, a trading name of Fletchers Solicitors.

The Foundation was born in 2022, out of Fletchers Group’s aim to be a responsible business.

Fletchers has been providing specialist legal services to seriously injured people since the 1980s and are one of the country’s leading specialist serious injury law firms.

The Foundation was set up because of a long-standing desire to provide more direct help and support to people who have suffered serious injuries or illnesses but who do not have the benefit of a legal claim to pursue.

We provide this support through the use of financial grants that can be used for aids and equipment, rehabilitation treatment, or a whole host of wider uses that will help individuals with their recovery or quality of life.

Our objective is to enable as many people as possible to thrive following a life-changing injury.

Wheelchair specific eligibility

We understand the vital importance of having a reliable and suitable wheelchair for independence and mobility. To ensure we consider all applications fairly, please follow these steps before applying for support from Fletchers Foundation:

Step 1: Complete an NHS Wheelchair Assessment

This is the first step. You can find information on how to get a free NHS wheelchair assessment [here]

Step 2: Apply for the NHS Wheelchair Budget

Learn about the Personal Health Budget (PHB) from the NHS, which can help cover the cost of a personalised wheelchair suited to your needs.

Important Note

We cannot process any applications without evidence of an NHS wheelchair assessment. Please complete the NHS assessment before filling out our application form. We do not accept any other types of reports (e.g., occupational health reports) in place of the NHS wheelchair assessment.

If you encounter a refusal to assess, or if the assessment declines to offer a wheelchair or budget, please discuss review or re-assessment options with your GP.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

General Eligibility

If you, a member of your family or a service user of your organisation is living with the long-term effects of serious personal injury, medical negligence or due to illness (born with or acquired), you may qualify for support from Fletchers Foundation, and we’d love to hear from you.

You are eligible to apply for support if:

  • You, a member of your family or a service user of your organisation is living with the long-term effects of serious personal injury, medical negligence, or illness.

Fletchers Foundation will consider requests for funding towards:

  • Aids or equipment
  • Rehabilitation Therapies (physiotherapy/Hydrotherapy/SLT/OTCBT, etc)
  • Prosthetics
  • Counselling for the individual who is suffering from mental health issues because of the serious injury, medical negligence, or illness.

We are unable to consider applications if:

  • The individual is eligible for any compensation award, in the process of claiming or has already received one.
  • The individual is financially able to support themselves, or their families can financially support them.
  • The individual is eligible for getting what they are asking for from the NHS (unless the NHS service or product is deemed to be unsuitable for the individual’s requirements or is not available in a suitable timeframe).
  • The individual has not followed the above wheelchair-specific criteria and applied to the NHS Wheelchair Budget first.
  • The individual doesn’t have at least one referee for the application form. Ideally this will be someone from the individual’s health team such as GP, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, a local council representative such as social worker or housing or a local professional that is not family.

We will not consider applications under any circumstance if:

  • The grant is going to promote/involve any religious or political aspects.
  • The grant is going to be paid into an individual applicant’s bank account (without an invoice, receipt, or proof of purchase).

How much can you apply for:

  • Individuals can apply up to £10,000.

How many times can you apply:

  • We will only support an individual once every 12 months.
  • Please note there isn’t a limit on how many times a local community group, registered charity, or school can signpost their services users to the foundation in a 12-month period. We will only support that individual once in a 12-month period, but there is no limit in how many individuals come from that local community group, registered charity, or school (within reason).

What is needed with the application:

Please send the following supporting documentation to info@fletchersfoundation.org.uk

  • For individuals applying – a supporting letter from a professional such as your GP, occupational therapist or physiotherapist that includes the following:
  • The condition/injury.
  • How it was obtained and when.
  • The progress made so far.
  • How what you’re asking for will make an impact and how can this be measured.
  • Why it can’t be provided by local statutory services and/or yourselves.
  • For individuals applying – a quote from the supplier showing what you’re applying for and the cost, without VAT.
  • For individuals applying for a wheelchair – we will need evidence as well that you have applied for the NHS Wheelchair Budget.

Please note

Fletchers Foundation will only donate funds within the U.K.

We require a referee for all applications – GP/NHS, social services, charity or professional.

If you or someone you care for or work with meets the eligibility criteria, please complete the below application form to apply for a grant from Fletchers Foundation.

If you are applying for funding to support a project with multiple beneficiaries, such as a group event or charity scheme, please complete a Project application form which can be downloaded from our website.

Please note

Applications will only be considered upon completion and submission of the above form, plus the supporting documentation being sent to info@fletchersfoundation.org.uk.

We submit the applications and supporting documentation to the trustees on the last Friday of the month, and we aim to let you know within two weeks of that.

All successful applicants will be contacted directly, using the details provided in the form, however, due to the large number of applications we receive it will not be possible to inform all applicants who are unsuccessful.

Please note that the board of trustees follows a robust and transparent assessment process, and their decision is final.

Therefore, it is important that all applicants provide up-to-date and relevant information regarding their project, why they wish to be awarded the grant, what they will do with the funding received and how it will benefit recipients in the future.
